Jewellery Care

Looking after your jewellery ensures it lasts a lifetime, and longer. Whether it’s a well-worn wedding band or a treasured family piece, regular care helps maintain its appearance and prevents damage over time.
Everyday Wear and Tear
Jewellery is often made to be worn and loved, but even the hardest-wearing pieces need a little attention. Try to avoid wearing rings when gardening, lifting weights, or doing anything that might cause scratching or pressure. Gemstones, even diamonds, can chip if knocked at the wrong angle.
Lotions, soaps and perfumes can build up over time, especially around settings. Remove jewellery before applying creams or fragrances, and take care with pieces that are strung on silk or leather, as moisture can cause damage.
Cleaning at Home
Most jewellery can be gently cleaned at home using warm water, a mild soap, and a very soft toothbrush. This helps remove dirt and restore sparkle without damaging stones or metalwork. Make sure to rinse well and dry with a soft cloth.
Avoid using harsh chemicals or ultrasonic cleaners unless you’re sure your piece is suitable as some antique pieces, as well as emeralds and pearls, are especially vulnerable.
Professional Cleaning and Checks
Bringing your jewellery in for a clean and check once a year is a good habit. Our workshop can polish metal, tighten settings, and check for signs of wear you may not notice, like thinning bands or loose claws.
We’ll always advise on the best course of action, whether it’s a simple clean or something more detailed like re-tipping a setting.
Storing Jewellery Correctly
Keep pieces in a fabric-lined box or pouch, ideally stored separately to avoid scratching. Pearls and other delicate items should be stored flat and never hung, as this can stretch the thread.
Try not to leave jewellery in bathrooms or near radiators as humidity and heat can affect some materials.
