Everything You Need to Know About Ring Resizing

There are many reasons why a ring might need resizing. Perhaps you’ve been gifted a ring that’s just a little too snug. Maybe you’d like to wear it on a different finger. Or, our favourite reason of all, you’ve inherited something special like a family piece filled with sentiment that simply doesn’t fit, yet.
Whatever the reason, ring resizing is a straightforward and common service. And when done properly, it allows a beloved piece to be worn comfortably for years to come. At Walter Bull & Son, we resize rings in-house with care and precision, offering guidance from the moment you walk through the door.
Can Every Ring Be Resized?
Not every ring can be resized, though most solid metal rings can. Pieces made in yellow, white or rose gold, platinum, and sterling silver can usually be altered up or down in size. However, rings that are plated or made with delicate materials, like glass or resin, may not be suitable for resizing.
Plated rings in particular present a challenge. Because their surface is coated in a fine layer of gold or silver over a base metal, cutting and re-joining the band tends to damage the finish, often causing the plating to flake or wear unevenly.
If you're unsure about your ring, our team can inspect it and let you know whether resizing is possible, and if so, how best to approach it.
How Much Can a Ring Be Resized?
As a general guide, rings can usually be adjusted up or down by two sizes. In some cases, a simple gold band can be resized beyond that, depending on its thickness and overall structure.
More intricate styles, particularly those with gemstones set around the band, may have limitations. The design, setting style and condition of the ring all play a part in what’s possible.
When we assess a ring for resizing at Walter Bull & Son, we look not only at the size change you need, but at the long-term strength and wearability of the piece.
Will It Be Noticeable?
A well-executed resizing should leave no visible trace. The band will be re-joined and polished so that the join is completely invisible to the eye and touch.
However, this kind of seamless finish relies on experience and craftsmanship. That’s why we always recommend using a trusted jeweller, one who knows not only how to resize a ring, but how to do so without compromising its look or structure.
Our workshop in Cirencester has been resizing rings for generations, and every piece is handled with the same level of care, whether it’s a recent purchase or a family heirloom.
How Does the Process Work?
To make a ring larger, we typically cut the back of the band and add a small section of matching metal. The band is then soldered, shaped, and polished to create a smooth, invisible join.
In some cases, we can stretch the band slightly if only a small size increase is needed, though this method isn’t suitable for all materials or settings.
To make a ring smaller, a small portion of the band is removed and the ends are carefully joined together again. Some customers like to keep the offcut of gold that’s removed, which we’re always happy to provide.
A Few Things to Keep in Mind
Finger size can vary throughout the year. Changes in temperature, hydration, and weight can all affect how a ring fits from season to season. If you’re considering resizing for just a fraction of a size, it’s worth discussing whether it’s truly necessary and what your best long-term option might be.
We always take the time to discuss how the ring is worn, how it fits throughout the day, and whether there are any upcoming changes that might affect your hands, like pregnancy or travel to warmer climates.
